imagine the sweetness

by Noreen Ocampo

I would not be surprised
if I grew to love you more—

perhaps find new love in the
grit of pomegranate seeds

between teeth & as I set
freshly-washed strawberries

out to dry. I hope watching
my earl gray shift through

hues after a careful teaspoon
of condensed milk still

merits a smile. perhaps I will
always hear you laughing—

I can see your mouth clearly.
I see it at the worst of times,

& you can tell, can’t you? still,
there are so many ways to hold

a person, & I am thankful to
have experienced all of them

with you. the thing is, you have
a home in my heart forever,

so maybe, in the morning,
pour yourself a cup of tea

& imagine the sweetness.
visit the version of me

that still sleeps in your
chest & remember her, too.
